Cement cable conduits and covers and asbestos

Cement conduits and cable covers are usually grey, and are hard and brittle. Asbestos cement conduit was widely used in pit and duct systems in Sydney’s central business district.  

 

Moulded cement conduits may be empty or contain cables. They were used for: 

  • routing electrical cables in and out of substations 

  • drainage under road crossings, footpaths and substations 

  • spare conduit alongside roads. 

 

Asbestos may be found in the fibre cement material in: 

  • high-voltage cable joint covers  

  • cable trench covers  

  • troughing used to encase joints, both direct buried and in pits 

  • substation concrete slabs.

Characteristics
