NSW Asbestos Coordination Committee

The NSW Asbestos Coordination Committee (NACC) works to minimise the impacts of asbestos on the people and environment of NSW through effective coordination of State Government agencies and emergency managers, including councils, to achieve the safe management of asbestos at all stages of the asbestos lifecycle.

The NACC is made up of a Chair and up to 18 member agencies plus observers that include representatives from NSW Government agencies and non-government agencies with a role in asbestos management in NSW. The NACC is established under s29 of the Protection of the Environment Administration Act 1991 by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

The NACC coordinates activities that relate to all aspects of asbestos information and awareness, assistance, major incident response, compliance and enforcement. The NACC replaces the Heads of Asbestos Coordination Authority (HACA) which operated from 2011 to 2018.

The NACCs functions are to:

  • develop a whole-of-government strategy on asbestos management in NSW, with a view to protecting human health and the environment;
  • monitor the implementation of the strategy and trouble-shoot any risks, delays or blockages to progress;
  • engage with the best evidence of the day to drive continuous improvement to asbestos management;
  • champion the importance of asbestos safety in NSW; and
  • report on its activities.

The NACC released a Communique following each meeting from its inception until the end of 2024 when the focus shifted to NSW Asbestos Delivery Plan 2024-30 reporting.
