Circuit breaker arc chute contractor covers and asbestos

Circuit breaker arc chute contractor covers are medium-density asbestos cement sheet on a metal backing.

Ex-Electricity Commission circuit breakers usually have silver-coloured box covers that don’t contain asbestos.

They are sometimes called ‘closing coil contractor covers’ and are found in:

  • Westinghouse 11kV J18/B18 family of circuit breakers. These covers contain friable asbestos. They are high risk if touched or disturbed.

  • South Wales 11kV DX4 breakers and 33kV GCN breakers. These covers are bonded and may contain non-friable asbestos. They are low risk.
