Cast aluminium choke boxes are attached to street lighting poles. Older-style choke boxes have an asbestos rope seal fitted in the flange under the cover. The asbestos rope is inside the box, and not visible when the box is closed. Street light choke boxes may be painted, or have a metallic silver colour.
Newer choke boxes are hinged and do not have an asbestos seal.

The asbestos rope seal is only fitted to the older-style choke boxes, which are fitted with four toggle clips and no hinges.
